Missionary Cake

Looking for advice. My grandmother always had a drawer of missionary cakes that she kept on hand to give out to friends. Unfortunately, I do not have her recipe. It tasted like your missionary recipe, but looked different. It was quite dark in color and was very moist. Any suggestions as to what ingredients might accomplish this?

I haven't tried this recipe but my Mom made a chocolatey missionary cake. She added a touch of Hershey's cocoa powder to her mix. Not sure how much but I'd add enough to make it semi dark.
