BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
4 qt. cucumbers
8 lg. white onions
1/2 c. salt
2 qt. ice
5 c. sugar
5 c. vinegar
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. celery seed
2 tbsp. mustard seed

Mix cucumbers with onions in large bowl. Sprinkle with salt and cracked ice. Place plate or lid on top. (Place something heavy on top of plate to weight it down) for 3 hours. Drain and rinse with cold water. Place in large kettle. Add sugar, vinegar, turmeric, celery seed, and mustard seed. Bring almost to a boil. Stir often. Do not allow to boil. Pack in hot jars and seal.
