BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
6 large cucumbers, sliced
3 c. water
1/2 c. coarse salt
3 medium onions, sliced
1 c. vinegar
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. mustard seed
3/4 tsp. ground turmeric
1/2 tsp. ground ginger

Wash cucumbers; heat 1 cup water and 1/2 cup salt until salt dissolves. Add remaining water and cool. Pour saltwater over cucumbers. Add onion and chill for 3 hours. Drain and rinse cucumbers in cold water.

Bring vinegar, sugar, celery seed, mustard seed, turmeric, ginger and pepper to a boil. Add cucumbers and onions; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook 2 minutes. Pack in sterilized jars. Add more liquid, if necessary, to fill jars.

Makes 4 pints.
