FRENCH ORANGE CAKE 
1 c. hot water
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 orange rind, grated
2 eggs
2 c. pastry flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. nuts

Pour hot water over chopped dates and baking soda. Stir and let stand. Cream shortening and sugar. Add rind, eggs, and sifted dry ingredients. Add nuts. Add to date mixture. Pour into tube or Bundt pan and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Melt 3/4 cup sugar and the juice of 1 orange together over heat, stirring until dissolved. Pour glaze over hot cake in pan immediately after removing from oven. Let stand until cool.
