FRENCH ORANGE CAKE 
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 lb. dates
1 c. nuts
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 eggs
Grated rind of 1 orange
Dash salt
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 3 tbsp. coffee

Cream sugar and butter; add eggs and beat well. Add buttermilk. Add flour gradually. Mix dates, nuts and orange rind mixing well. Add soda mixture last; mix well. Bake in a well greased tube pan at 325 degrees.

GLAZE:

1/2 c. fresh orange juice
1 c. sugar

Mix above well until sugar dissolves. Pour over cake and let soak while cake is hot. (I bake mine in an iron skillet.)
