FRENCH ORANGE CAKE 
1 c. dates
1 c. nuts
1 stick butter
2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. hot water
1/2 c. milk
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix soda with hot water. Add dates. Cream butter and add sugar and eggs. Beat well, add dry ingredients and milk alternately. Bake in moderate 350 degree oven. Top with 1/2 cup sugar and 1 1/2 cups orange juice. Let simmer on stove for a few minutes. Put on cake. Let cool and serve with whipped cream topped with cherry.
