5 DAY PICKLES OR "COMPANY'S
BEST"
 
10 med. cucumbers
8 c. sugar (I use half granulated and half brown or all brown)
2 tbsp. mixed pickling spices
5 tsp. salt
4 c. cider vinegar

Wash and cover cucumbers with boiling water and allow to stand until next morning. Drain and repeat procedure for 4 days. On the fifth day, drain and slice in 1/2 inch pieces.

Combine sugar, spices, salt and vinegar and bring to a boil. Pour over cucumbers and let stand 2 days. On third day, bring to a boil and seal in sterilized jars. Good luck. Don't let the syrup boil over. You'll have a mess to clean.

I have the same recipe but have changed it a little -- reduce the sugar to 5 c of white sugar only and use white vinegar instead of the cider. 8 cups of sugar tends to almost candy the pickles. 5 cups makes it a sweet but tart pickle. Just finished a batch today.
