1/2 c. soft shortening (part butter)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
3/4 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Cream butter and 1 cup sugar; add egg. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla. Sift, then add dry ingredients. Chill dough. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. PERSONAL NOTE: So easy that making them is a thrill for a young child.
