ORANGE COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. orange juice
1 tsp. grated orange rind
2 3/4 c. sifted flour
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add orange juice and orange rind. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Chill the dough at least 3 hours. Roll to 1/8-1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut cookies with floured cookie cutters. Brush with a beaten egg and decorate with sprinkles. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Yields 2 1/2 dozen.
