1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup sugar
1 rounded tsp. baking soda
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening

Stir together dry ingredients; sift. Make a hole in the center of this and add the rest of the ingredients. Beat together with a spoon and mix well.

Bake in loaf or layer pan, greased & floured, at 350°F for 30 minutes, or until toothpick comes out dry when inserted. Frost as desired.
