BISCUITS 
3 c. flour
4 1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 1/2 tbsp. sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cream of tartar
3/4 c. butter flavor Crisco shortening
1 1/2 c. buttermilk

Into a 2-quart bowl, measure flour; sprinkle in baking powder, sugar, salt, and cream of tartar. Toss lightly with fork. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture is coarse with particles about the size of peas. Make a well in center of mixture; pour in half the milk. Toss or mix gently with fork. Add remaining milk.

Mix lightly with fork; turn out on lightly floured counter top or wax paper. Roll or pat to thickness of 1/2 to 3/4 inches. Cut with lightly floured cutter, about 2 inches in diameter; place on cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes about 2 dozen biscuits.
