LENTEN SESAME SQUARES 
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/3 c. boiling water
1 c. pure vegetable shortening
3/4 c. sugar (I used honey)
2 c. bran flakes
1 1/2 c. rolled oats, quick-cooking
1/4 c. sesame seeds, toasted
1 1/2 c. flour, sifted
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon

Dissolve baking soda in boiling water; cool. Cream shortening with sugar until light and fluffy. Add half of soda water and blend well. Stir in remaining ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.

Divide batter in half. Spread in 2 ungreased cookie sheets, 13x10 inches. With sharp knife, mark dough in squares. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

While still hot, cut along marks; remove squares from sheet. Makes 5 dozen crispy squares.
