GOLDEN BAKED MACARONI AND CHEESE
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3 cups milk
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 (16 oz.) pkg. bite sized macaroni (8 oz.)
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
bread crumbs

Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Blend in flour and gradually add the milk, stirring constantly; add the seasonings. Cook until the sauce is thickened.

Add one cup grated cheddar cheese and stir until melted. Cook macaroni as directed, drain, and add to cheese sauce and mix well. Turn the mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish or pan. Sprinkle the top with 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs.

Bake in a 375°F oven for about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and place under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned. Serves 6-8.

Golden Baked Macaroni and Cheese

I have used this recipe in a kid's cooking class for several years. It's a great beginner recipe because it involves several techniques and is the first step in sauce-making, something I avoided for a long time because it sounded so hard. It is tasty and one of the very few recipes that an 11 or 12 year old could read and follow and have a successful finished product.

Tried this recipe and my very discerning taster, my 6 year old, gave it 2 thumbs up. I read the previous reviews about the sauce being too thick so I doubled the butter, flour, milk and cheese, and used 12 oz of macaroni. It turned out great. I added a little more salt for our taste and omitted the mustard and worstershire sauce and substituted crushed corn flakes for the bread crumbs. 12 oz just barely fit in the 13 x 9 baking dish and there was enough for leftovers and we are a family of 5.

Great and easy! I also added more cheese to the sauce, and used Cabot Vermont Cheddar!! It was OUTSTANDING!

In my 60 years of cooking, I have made a lot of mac and cheese and this is the most delicious ever!! If it didn't turn out DELICIOUS,don't blame the recipe because maybe the chef was at fault! Leftovers warmed up nicely in the oven, too.

I add just a hint of curry powder to the sauce. Gives a delicate, undefinable flavor. Never have any leftovers!

It will be the fourth Thanksgiving I'll be using this recipe. With its perfect balance of creaminess, cheesiness and bite of crunchiness, it's the winning side stealer every time! Also keeps wonderfully the day before. Tonight I'll be preparing and then just popping it in the oven with the added breadcrumbs tomorrow for our feast. Can't wait!

I have been making this recipe for almost 10 years now I it's a crowd pleaser anytime! This is the best mac and cheese recipe i have found anywhere. The dry mustard adds something that just takes this to the top. In addition I add a pinch of nutmeg. Enjoy!
