BARNEGAT PEAR TREASURE SQUARES
1 (16 oz.) can pears in natural juices
1/2 c. butter, softened
3/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. whole wheat flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

3 cups "treasures" such as:

1 1/2 c. miniature semi-sweet chocolate or butterscotch morsels
1 c. golden raisins, dark raisins, or pitted chopped dates
1/2 c. chopped hazel nuts (filberts), or walnuts, or pecans

Drain pears, reserving 1/2 cup liquid; dice pears.

In a large mixing bowl, with an electric mixer, beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add egg, vanilla and reserved 1/2 cup pear liquid; mix well. Combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; stir into butter mixture along with "treasures" and diced pears.

Spray a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Turn batter into pan. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until wooden pick inserted near center comes out clean. Cut into bars while still warm. Makes 2 dozen bars.
