SLOPPY JOES, ITALIAN STYLE | |
3/4 lb. Italian style bulk sausage 3/4 lb. ground round 1/4 tsp. anise (optional) 3/4 tsp. garlic powder 3/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 4 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce 3/4 tsp. sweet basil 6 crusty French rolls 12 slices mozzarella cheese Brown sausage and beef in deep, heavy saucepan. If sausage is not seasoned with anise, add seed. Add next 4 ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer uncovered about 1 1/2 hours. Add basil and simmer 1/2 hour longer. Cut rolls in half lengthwise. Cover inside top half with 2 slices of mozzarella cheese, sprinkle with paprika. Broil until cheese melts. Spread meat mixture on bottom half of rolls. Put halves together and serve. |
