THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. butter, softened
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg, separated
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. nuts, chopped finely
Jelly

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix brown sugar, butter, shortening, egg yolk and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Mold dough into 1" balls. Beat egg whites slightly. Dip balls into egg white and roll in nuts. Place about 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Press thumb deeply in center of each. Bake until light brown, about 10 minutes. Remove immediately from sheet and cool. Fill thumbprints with jelly.
