OLD FASHION STACK CAKE
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/3 c. molasses
1 beaten egg
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ginger
Cooked dried apples

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg, molasses, buttermilk and mix well. Sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and ginger. Add to the other mixture, adding vanilla also. Roll out as for pastry (like pie crust). Cut to fit in an iron skillet. Bake 6 or 7 layers at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. I use the same skillet and as each one gets done I slip it out of the skillet and lay it on a clean towel. When the last one gets done spread each layer with cooked dried apple mix and stack them on top of each other. Apple mix - cooked dried apples; add sugar and spices to taste.
