This recipe is INSANE. My husband was extremely skeptical when he heard what I was going to do, but was willing to try. The aroma made our mouths water instantly and when it was finally ready to carve we couldn't resist tasting it before it even hit the plate. Huge success. We will definitely be making this again and again and again!!!

When adding the OJ concentrate to this recipe, does one also add the spice packet that comes with the beef? And, what are peoples' thoughts about adding potatoes and cabbage in as well?

I wanted to try something a little different for my corned beef and was very happy with this recipe. I only used about 1 cup OJ but also added half a bottle of Guinness stout and 2 tbsp. spicy coarse mustard. Yummy and very juicy!

I used apple juice instead of orange and we didn't even taste the juice at all, it just contributed to making the meat more tender. I did not trim or rinse the meat as we like it salty. It was excellent!!

OK... SO I TRIED THIS RECIPE. WOW! I didn't have the frozen OJ so, I used the Tropicana OJ I had in my fridge. It was delish. I used 3.75 pounds of corned beef. Used the spice packet, the juice and placed it on low for 12 hrs. I added 1 onion, 5 yukon gold potatoes peeled and cut in pieces. Instead of cabbage I used brussel sprouts. About 15 or so. I cooked it for about another hour. The best Irish Meal ever made. I forgot the carrots... but I am sure those would be good in there too. The kids also loved it. They are 3 & 5 years old. Great recipe will be doing this every year. I might try some pineapple next time. THANKS GUYS!

Excellent!!! Used 6 oz of orange juice after rinsing/soaking/draining. A small spice pack came with the point cut so I threw that in as well. My wife who loves corned beef said it was the best she ever had. So simple to make. Slow cooked for nine hrs. Bright red color and juicy throughout.

This was my first time making corn beef. It was 3.57 lbs. I used 6 oz of frozen orange juice thawed & added about 2 oz of water. I cut up one onion & put it on the bottom before I put corn beef in. Let cook for about 9 hours than put 2 sweet potatoes cut up in pot. Let cook about 2.5 more hours. Omgoodness all I have to say is FANTASTIC!

THE BEST! Have prepared corned beef in crockpot many ways, and the best is with the OJ concentrate along with the following:

water to the top of meat
spice packet
one chopped onion
3 heaping tbs of both garlic and spicy brown mustard
High for an hour and LOW for 7 hours. Its a worry free winner!

Family loved it. Had a large flat corned beef so used a 12 oz can of OJ. Cooked faster than suggested time. So tender. I also cooked another in an inch of water and covered with honey mustard and brown sugar. Not nearly as good as the OJ recipe. I didn't trim the fat off the honey mustard recipe and should have. This recipe is not that great... very blah for a corned beef.

Tried orange juice with my corned beef in the slow cooker. I liked it, but to my taste - something else would be better. Apple juice maybe, or something else sweet.

I've done hams for years in slow cookers with Dr. Pepper - how about ginger ale or 7-up for corned beef? Any thoughts?

 Melissa (Virginia) replies:
C Pile from Kansas, that was a great idea! My hubby doesn't like anything weird, so I didn't want to try the OJ. Replaced it with 2 cans of Dr. Pepper (or just enough to cover the meat) and it was great, we both loved it. I should have drained and rinsed the salty brine, but I didn't, so I thought it was too salty, but he loved it. Also used a little bit of brown sugar, whole grain mustard, minced garlic and some dried onion. Maybe a tbsp. of each, I never measure anything.

At first I was like "Orange Juice?" yeah but I decided to try it, you don't really taste the orange juice. I used the orange juice, 2 oz of water, season packet, and added carrots & potatoes, it was sooo DELICIOUS!!!! Absolutely loved it & will be making this again!!!!

So how do you know when its done? Mine is about 3 pounds and I'm cooking it on high. Some of the times mentioned here (12 hours) seem excessive!
