CANDY CANE COOKIES | |
1 c. powdered sugar 1/2 c. butter, softened 1/2 c. shortening 1 egg 1 1/2 tsp. almond extract or you can use peppermint extract 1 tsp. vanilla 2 1/2 c. flour 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. red food coloring 1/2 c. crushed peppermint candy 1/2 c. sugar (granulated) Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix powdered sugar, butter, shortening, egg, extract and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Divide dough into halves. Tint one half with the food coloring. For each candy cane, shape one teaspoon dough from each part into a 4" rope. Make smooth even ropes by rolling the dough back and forth on a lightly floured board. Place 1 red and 1 white strip side by side, press together lightly and twist. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve top down to form handle of cane. Complete cookies one at a time. Bake until set and very light brown, about 9 minutes. Mix crushed candy and granulated sugar. Immediately pour over cookies. Remove from cookie sheet. |
