5 c. flour 1/4 c. sugar 3 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt (low sodium is ok) 1 scant tsp. baking soda 1 c. shortening 2 tbsp. warm water 1 pkg. dry yeast 2 c. buttermilk, if no buttermilk take 2 tbsp. milk away from the 2 c. milk & replace with 2 tbsp. vinegar (clear) Sift dry ingredients together. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add it and buttermilk to dry ingredients. Mix well. Turn out onto lightly floured board. Add more flour, if necessary to dough. Roll 1/4 inch thick and cut. Roll in melted butter. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. |
