BEST - EVER GINGERSNAPS 
1 c. sugar
2 c. plain flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
3/4 c. shortening
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg, slightly beaten
Sugar

Combine 1 cup sugar, flour, salt, soda and spices; stir lightly. Cut in shortening to resemble coarse crumbs. Stir in molasses and egg.

Shape dough into 1 inch balls, and roll them in sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheets; bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove from baking sheets immediately. (Cookies will firm quickly as they cool.) Yield: about 4 1/2 dozen.
