CANDY APPLES | |
8 medium red, yellow or green apples 8 wooden sticks or skewers 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 cups light corn syrup (Karo) 1/2 cup water 2 drops oil of cinnamon or lemon extract or 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract 1 tsp. red, yellow or green food coloring Wash and dry apples; remove stems and insert straight ends of sticks into stem ends. Combine sugar, corn syrup and water; cook over medium heat until mixture boils, stirring constantly. Cook without stirring until a small amount of mixture dropped into cold water separates into threads which are hard but not brittle (290°F on candy thermometer). Remove from heat; stir in flavoring and coloring until blended. Hold apples by wooden stick, tip and slide apple into syrup; twirl to coat evenly. Remove from syrup; let excess mixture drip off. Twirl to spread mixture evenly over apple. Place in greased pan to cool; store in cool place. Cooks Note: Use of a candy thermometer is recommended. Makes 8 candy apples. |
