GREAT-GRANDMOTHER'S STEAMED
BROWN BREAD (SWEDISH)
 
1 egg
1/2 c. molasses & 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. sour or buttermilk
2 tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 c. graham flour
1/2 c. white flour
1/2 c. cornmeal
1 c. chopped raisins (opt.)

Beat egg in large bowl; add sugar and molasses. Add soda to milk. Add to egg mixture alternately with sifted dry ingredients. Add raisins. Put dough in 3 (1 pound) cans with both ends removed and well-greased. Fill about 3/4 full. Steam over 1 inch boiling water for 2 hours. Dry 15 minutes in oven. Serves 12 to 14.

HARD SAUCE:

1/2 c. butter
1 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and sugar gradually; add vanilla. Chill, serve over bread.
