1 c. dates, cut up
1 scant tsp. baking soda
1 1/4 c. boiling water

Mix above and cool. 1 c. sugar 2 eggs 1 1/2 c. flour + 2 tbsp. 3/4 tsp. baking soda 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 c. chocolate chips 1/2 c. nuts

Cream shortening, sugar and add eggs. Beat well. Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to egg mixture alternately with cooled date mixture. Pour in 9 x 13 inch loaf pan. Sprinkle nuts and chocolate chips on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
