IRENE'S SUGAR COOKIES 
4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. lemon extract
1 c. buttermilk

Mix all ingredients. Chill dough thoroughly. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick on floured board and cut with cookie cutters. Place on greased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with grains of sugar. Decorate with nuts, raisins, coconut, etc. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

NOTE: Regular milk soured with vinegar may be substituted for buttermilk.
