1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Sift together flour, soda and salt. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and beat. Add flour, soda and salt mix. Divide dough in thirds.

1. Lemon: Add 3/4 teaspoon lemon extract to 1/3 of dough.

2. Cocoa-Spice: Mix 2 tablespoons cocoa, 1/2 teaspoon each of nutmeg and cloves and 1 tablespoon water. Add this to 1/3 of dough.

3. Peanut Orange: Mix 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1 tablespoon grated orange rind, and 2 tablespoons milk. Add to 1/3 dough.
