OLD GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE 
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. butter
2 1/2 c. flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. cocoa in 1/2 c. water

Cream sugar and butter together; add allspice, cinnamon, soda, eggs, coffee- cocoa mixture and buttermilk, then flour. Bake at 350 degrees in layer pans for 30 to 45 minutes or until done. I always butter pans and line bottom of pan with 2 pieces of wax paper, buttered, cut to size of pan to keep it from sticking to pan and come out easier.

CARAMEL ICING:

2 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 c. milk

Boil until it is thick and spins a thread. While cooking, beat or stir mixture constantly. You can tell when mixture is done, it will pop bubbles. I usually double recipe to make plenty to cover sides of cake and top of layers.
