WALDORF ASTORIA RED CAKE | |
1/2 c. shortening 1 1/2 c. sugar 2 eggs 2 c. flour 1 c. buttermilk 1 tsp. vanilla 1 oz. red food color 2 tsp. cocoa 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vinegar 1 tsp. baking soda Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs 1 at a time, beat well after each addition. Add food color. Combine cocoa and salt. Sift flour and cocoa mixture, add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture. Combine vinegar and soda. Fold in mixture. Pour into pans. Bake 30 minutes at 325 degrees. Cool completely. FROSTING: 1 c. milk 1/2 c. flour Pinch of salt 1 c. sugar 1 stick butter 1/2 c. shortening 1 tsp. vanilla Combine milk and flour. Cook until a thick paste. Remove from head and add salt. Cool! Combine remaining ingredients, beat at high speed until fluffy. Add cooked mixture and beat well. About 15 minutes. Frost cake. (May color frosting with a drop of red food coloring left in bottle - frosting will be pink.) |
