WALDORF ASTORIA RED CAKE | |
1/2 c. shortening 1 1/2 c. sugar 2 eggs 2 oz. red food coloring 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 2 tsp. cocoa 1 c. buttermilk 1 tsp. baking soda 2 1/4 c. flour 1 tsp. vinegar Cream sugar and shortening add beaten eggs make a paste of food coloring, salt and vanilla and cocoa. Add to cream mixture. Add buttermilk and flour alternately. Add soda to vinegar and add to batter. Bake in 3 (8 inch) layer pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Frost with white cream frosting. Heat 1 cup milk until lukewarm add 5 tablespoons flour. Cook until thick and set aside to cool. With electric mixer mix 1 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup Crisco and 1/2 cup butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat until creamy, then add flour milk mixture and beat for 15 to 20 minutes. Spread on layers and sides. |
