DEEP DISH CRUSTLESS APPLE PIE 
5 or 6 tart apples
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. cake flour
Pinch of salt
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. butter
NO PIE CRUST NEEDED

Fill well greased deep dish pie pan with thin slices of apples which have been peeled and cored. Mix together sugar, flour, salt and nutmeg. Work butter into dry ingredients with a pastry blender (or with fingers) until mixture is like coarse cornmeal. Put mixture on top of apples to form a top crust. There is no bottom crust. Bake in moderate oven, 325 degrees, for 50 minutes. Serve cool with whipped cream or ice cream. Serves 6 to 8.
