HAM AND SPLIT PEA SOUP 
1 smoked boneless butt ham (about 2 1/2 lbs.)
2 lbs. washed split peas
1 chopped onion
1 chopped carrot
6 whole black peppers
2 qt. water
3 stalks chopped celery
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper
Croutons

Put all ingredients EXCEPT salt, pepper and croutons in large kettle. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until meat is tender and peas are mushy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove meat, cut into bite-size pieces. Put meat in serving bowls, fill with soup and sprinkle with croutons.
