MAMA'S BUTTERMILK CORNBREAD 
1 c. cornmeal
1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 or 2 eggs, beaten
1/4 c. melted shortening

Combine dry ingredients and mix well. Combine buttermilk, beaten egg, and melted shortening; add to dry mixture. Stir well and spoon into hot heavily greased 10 inch baking pan or cornstick pan. Bake at 450 degrees about 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Heavy black skillet is great. Heat shortening or bacon drippings smoking hot and pour batter in; drizzle shortening on top of bread.
