RUTH'S MATRIMONIAL BARS 
1 1/2 c. dates, chopped or cut up
1 c. water
1/2 c. sugar

Boil together until thick.

Crumb together (I use a pastry blender and mix together like for pie crust) : 1 1/2 c. oatmeal 2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. butter

Mix or crumb all this together good. Then spread 1/2 of this mixture in a 9 x 13 pan and pat the mixture in firmly. Put the date mixture on and sprinkle some chopped nuts on the date mixture, then put the other 1/2 of the crumb mixture on the date mixture and pat that down firmly.

Bake 1/2 hour in a 375 degree oven or bake until brown and it sizzles on the bottom when you touch it with a wet finger (like a flat iron does when touched with a wet finger).
