BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
1 gallon cucumber (unpeeled and sliced)
8 onions, sliced
1/2 c. salt

Arrange above in layers, top with crushed ice. Let stand 3 hours.

Heat:

5 c. vinegar
4 c. sugar
2 tbsp. mustard seed
2 tbsp. celery seed
1 tbsp. thyme
1/2 tbsp. ground allspice

Let above come to boil; add cucumbers and onions and come to second boil. Fill sterilized jars (makes 10 pints).
