POPPY SEED CAKE (MAKOS TORTA) 
1 c. ground poppy seeds (I use Bakers poppy seed - 1 jar)
1/2 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla
4 egg whites, beaten stiff

Cream butter, add sugar and beat until creamy. Add poppy seed from jar (if you use regular ground poppy seed soak in milk overnight). Beat the poppy seed mix into the butter and sugar and then add dry ingredients and mix well. Then add vanilla and mix again. Now you can fold in the beaten egg whites carefully.

Bake in an oblong pan or if you want a layer cake use 2 layers pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 175 degrees for 30 minutes then keep checking with toothpick until cake is done. A plain vanilla icing is nice on a layer cake or you can just dust powdered sugar on the oblong one.
