APPLESAUCE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 1/2 c. canned applesauce
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs (1/3 to 1/2 c.)
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
Browned Butter Frosting or Satiny Beige Frosting

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour oblong pan, 13 x 9 x 2 inches or 2 round layer pans, 8 or 9 x 1 1/2 inches. Measure all ingredients except frosting into large mixer bowl. Blend 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping bowl constantly. Beat 3 minutes on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour batter into pan(s).

Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, oblong 60 to 65 minutes, layers 50 to 55 minutes. Cool. Frost cake with Browned Butter Frosting.

Do not use self-rising flour in this recipe.

Browned Butter Frosting: Heat 1/3 cup butter in saucepan over medium heat until delicate brown. Cool slightly. Blend in 3 cups confectioners' sugar. Stir in 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla and 2 tablespoons milk; beat until smooth and spreading consistency.
