LONG ISLAND NUT BREAD OR
GRANDMOTHER HEINRICH'S NUT BREAD
 
4 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 scant c. sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 c. milk
3/4 c. walnuts, broken

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Beat the egg and add the milk to the egg. Add the egg mixture to the sifted dry ingredients. Beat well. Dough will be stiff. Add the walnuts. Bake in 1 (9 1/2 x 5 1/4 inch) loaf pan or in 2 (8 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch) loaf pans, well greased. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from pans while hot and if desired, spread butter on top and sides to keep crust soft. Slice thinly.
