Wash and slice 2 gallons of cucumbers. Boil 1 gallon of water and 2 cups salt. Pour over cucumbers in crock jar. Cover and let set for 7 days; drain but do not wash.

Boil 1 gallon water and 3 tablespoons alum; pour over cucumbers and let set 24 hours. Drain, but do not wash. Mix 2 quarts apple cider vinegar, 16 cups sugar, and 1 box pickling spice. Pour over pickles. Let set 24 hours. Repeat 3 times and can on 4th day.
