CARAWAY BREAD STICKS 
1 c. warm water
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. leaf sage, crumbled
2 tsp. caraway seeds
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg
3-3 1/4 c. sifted flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water; stir in sugar, salt, seasonings, shortening and egg. Gradually add flour and beat vigorously. (Do not knead.) Place in greased bowl, greased side up. Cover with damp cloth, and refrigerate at least 2 hours (or overnight) before forming into sticks.

Divide chilled dough into 3 dozen small pieces. Roll into 8 inch pencil-like strips and place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until double (1 1/2-2 hours). Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Yield 4 dozen medium sticks.
