CARAMEL FROSTED BARS 
6 tbsp. (3/4 stick) butter
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
3/4 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. chopped nuts

Cream together butter and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla. Sift flour, salt and baking soda. Add to mixture. Stir in nuts and spread in 9x9x2-inch pan. Bake at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool slightly then spread with frosting (below). Cut into bars.

Frosting:

2 tbsp. butter
1/3 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. confectioners' sugar, sifted
chopped nuts

In a saucepan bring butter, brown sugar and water to a boil. Remove from heat. Add vanilla. Gradually stir in sifted confectioners' sugar. Spread immediately on slightly cooled baked layer. Sprinkle with nuts.

Makes 2 dozen bars.
