GRANNY'S SLOVAKIAN NUT ROLLS
My first attempt at my Grandmothers nut rolls... Literally... I just made the dough and put it in the refrigerator. There was not really a recipe, but this is what I was able to piece together from several peoples memories. Granny has been gone for a long time, and so have these old fashioned nut rolls... I remember them as a kid, and can't believe nobody has tried to make them again!

If you do try them, or adjust the recipe... Please comment... As they are most likely a work in progress...

YOU WILL NEED:

1 very large bowl
a sturdy spoon
2 hands

DOUGH:

7 cups all-purpose flour
1 lb. (4 sticks) butter melted
1 large yeast cake (or equivalent)
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup sugar
4 eggs, beaten
pinch of salt
1 cup evaporated milk

Dissolve yeast in the warm water. Melt butter. Mix dry ingredients in very large bowl (flour, sugar, salt). Add the melted butter... Mix a little. Add evaporated milk... Mix a little. Add eggs... Mix a little. Add the dissolved yeast.

At this point it will probably become to hard to mix with a spoon, so get in there with your hands! The finished product will be very sticky, and much thinner than regular bread dough. It is almost a paste.

Once it is mixed well, cover with Saran or plastic wrap, and place in refrigerator overnight.

FILLING:

1 lb. walnuts
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Grind the walnuts. Mix everything together.

Warm it slightly... Just to help it combine into a spread; and make it easier to spread, so the dough doesn't rip.

DAY 2:

Take the dough from the refrigerator. Cut dough into 3rds, cut the 3rds into halves (you now have 6 loaves). Roll them out like you are making pie shells, around 1/4-inch thick. Spread the warm filling, roll them up, tucking the ends under. Place on cookie sheet... Can probably fit 2 per sheet.

Brush with a beaten egg if you like a shiny golden top.

Bake at 350°F until golden, about 1/2 hour.

Makes 6 big ones.
