COLD-OVEN POUND CAKE 
3 c. sugar
1/2 c. Crisco
3 c. plain flour
1 c. milk
1 tsp. lemon flavoring
2 sticks butter
6 lg. eggs
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring
1 tsp. almond flavoring

Cream sugar, butter, and Crisco; add eggs, one at a time and blend well. Add flour and milk alternately to batter; add vanilla, lemon, and almond flavorings.

Pour into greased and floured tube pan. Place in cold oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour 15 minutes (low rack in oven).

NOTE: Add flavoring to milk - also if you like use 1 stick butter and 1 stick butter. If browning too fast, lay aluminum foil over.

GLAZE FOR POUND CAKE (or others) :

In a small bowl with electric mixer, beat together 1 cup confectioners sugar, 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening and 3-4 teaspoons water until smooth.

Spread glaze over top of cake, allowing some to run down side. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired. You may decorate with nuts and candied fruit. I also added 1/2 teaspoon lemon flavoring to glaze - not necessary.
