1 or 2 sqs. chocolate
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
2/3 c. applesauce
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour, sifted
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. nuts, chopped
Powdered sugar

Melt shortening and chocolate together over low heat. Cool slightly. In a large bowl, beat eggs, add sugar, applesauce and vanilla. Add chocolate mixture. Mix well. Sift together dry ingredients and add. Blend thoroughly. Stir in nuts. Bake in a greased 9 inch square pan at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool and cut in squares and dust with powdered sugar.
