DATE FILLED COOKIES 
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour

Take 1/2 cup measuring cup, put egg in, fill with milk. Sift cream of tartar, soda and flour. Mix in usual manner. Leave in refrigerator about 12 minutes. Roll out, cut with small cookie cutter and bake at 375 degrees for about 12 minutes. Fill after baking.

FILLING:

1 (8 oz.) pkg. pitted dates, cut in pieces
1 c. sugar
1 c. water

Boil until thick. For variation use 1/2 cup walnuts and substitute 1/2 cup orange juice for 1/2 cup water.
