SHEET PIE (LAPTORTA) | |
1 c. shortening 4 c. flour 1 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. a 1 tbsp. vanilla 1/2 c. sour milk or buttermilk Cut shortening into dry ingredients. Add milk and vanilla and blend. This mixture will be crumbly. Divide the dough in half and roll the first half out on wax paper to fit a oblong pan. You may even use a cookie sheet if you want it that large. If the dough seems to crumbly to work with add just a few more drops of milk to make it more pliable. Put on your choice of pie filling and you may either crumble the dough on the top or roll out the remaining dough and make a full cover or roll out the dough and cut lattice strips. This is not "flaky" type dough, so you can handle it. This is very versatile and how grandma felt when she made this determined the way it was topped. When she was tired she crumbled the top, but for the Minister she fancy latticed it. |
