OLD-FASHIONED QUAKER OATS FAMOUS
OATMEAL COOKIES
 
3/4 cup shortening, soft
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3 cups oats, uncooked

Beat shortening, sugars, egg, water and vanilla together until creamy. Stir together flour, salt and baking soda; add to creamed mixture, blend well. Stir in oats. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets.

Bake in preheated moderate (350°F) oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

Variation: add chopped nutmeats, raisins, chocolate chips or coconut.

Makes 5 dozen.

I have this recipe on a Quaker Oatmeal tin from the 80's but I have packed it away when I painted my kitchen. These are my favorite and so glad someone posted it on here, because I have been craving them.

I love this recipe I divided it in three separate bowls, added smashed bananas in one, candy pecans in the other and both in one and believe me when I say they were a hit! Also add just a touch more of baking soda, it really makes them soft and a 'lil baking powder makes them nice and puffy.

Try adding approximately 1/2 teaspoon of almond flavoring to original recipe for a little variety. They are delicious!

We always added RAISINS. I am hoping that 1 cup of raisins is the correct amount. I have been searching for this recipe since realizing that Quaker changed it and it didn't rise right or taste right. SO GLAD to find it here! THANKS!

These are my son's favorite cookies! (he's 51). I make a double batch every week and when he comes over to see me each night he stuffs his pockets with them to eat on his way home. With the oats and raisins, they're almost healthy! Love 'em.

I have also made this with half butter and half coconut oil (still hard). Add 1/2 sweetened coconut for fruit. Also great with chopped macadamia nuts and milk chocolate. Rave feedback.

This is the recipe I've been hunting for! My Mom used too make these for me when I was a little girl. And now I make them for my kids! I've moved so many times I lost the recipe somewhere between college and moving between states. I'm so happy I've found it again! I had to substitute the shortening for a while when I needed my cholesterol to go down. I used applesauce, but didn't skimp on the walnuts raisins nor dark chocolate chips;-) and they came out like mini bread bars. Thankfully low cholesterol butters now exist and I can use those and keep the flavor. I have tried adding a touch of cinnamon or cocoa powder.

Oatmeal cookies are my all-time, #1 favorite cookie. I learned to make them watching my mother. She, as most people, used the Quaker Oats recipe. I make one batch with raisins and pecans. I make another batch with raisins and spices. Also, I use butter instead of hydrogenated vegetable oil or liquid oil. The flavor is amazing. Happy cooking all!
