BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES I 
3 qts. thin sliced sm. cucumbers
10 med. white onions, thin sliced
1/3 c. salt
2 qts. cracked ice
3 3/4 c. sugar
3 3/4 c. cider vinegar
1 1/8 tsp. ground turmeric
3/4 tsp. celery seed
1 1/2 tsp. mustard seed

Combine cucumbers and onions; sprinkle with salt and cover with cracked ice. Cover with a heavy lid and let stand for 3 hours. Drain thoroughly and rinse well with cold water. Place in a large kettle. Add rest of ingredients and bring almost to a boil, stirring constantly. Do not boil. Pack at once into hot sterilized jars and seal. Process in hot water bath for 5 minutes.
