Preheat oven - 350 degrees for stainless steel cake pan or 325 degrees for glass dish.

1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 c. chopped raw apples
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1/3 c. chopped dates, prunes or raisins

Cream shortening and sugar. Stir in egg. Add fruit and nuts. Add remaining ingredients, sifted together. For a double recipe, use a 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan. For a single recipe - square pan of 9 inches. Place in preheated oven for 40-45 minutes for double recipe. Place in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes for single recipe.
