AUSTRIA APPLE STRUDEL
1 tbsp. butter
1 egg
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. warm water
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/3 c. melted butter
2 tbsp. dark rum
6 tbsp. fine dry bread crumbs
8 c. tart apples, partially peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/3 c. finely chopped almonds
1 c. seedless raisins
Powdered sugar

Combine flour, salt, egg, water and butter. Beat until a firm dough which pulls away from bowl is formed. Knead until smooth and elastic; cover and let stand 30 minutes. Cut with sharp knife into 2 equal parts. Roll out each piece on floured cloth to a 12 x 18 rectangle. Brush with melted butter. Sprinkle evenly with crumbs. Spread 4 cups of apples on each portion, lengthwise down the center of the dough. Sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon rum, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 2 tablespoons almonds, and 1/2 cup raisins. Fold dough over apples on one side and then the other. Slide rolls onto greased baking sheet. Brush with melted butter. Bake in 400 degree oven 45 minutes. Sprinkle on powdered sugar while still warm. Cut into 2 inch slices. Serve warm with whipped cream.

I got this recipe from a relative while visiting in Muenster. It was Don's great grandmother's recipe. Over the years, little extras such as the powdered sugar were added. It is really delicious.
