OLD-FASHIONED BREAD PUDDING
5-6 slices white bread
1/2 c. soft butter
1 c. seedless raisins
5 eggs
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/8 tsp. mace
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
4 c. light cream or milk
2 tsp. vanilla

Butter the bread slices (bread should be somewhat dry). Stack slices on cutting board and cut in 1/2-inch cubes. Scatter layer of cubes in greased 3-quart casserole. Sprinkle with 1/2 the raisins and continue to layer until bread cubes and raisins are used up.

Beat eggs in a bowl and add sugar, spices, salt and baking powder. Beat well to blend. Scald cream or milk, add vanilla and stir into egg mixture a little at a time. Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread in the casserole. Let stand 10 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
